Those of you with Leeds student accommodation in Headingley may be interested to know that local landmark The Lounge Cinema, which opened in 1916 and closed in 2005, is set for redevelopment. The Lounge closed after audiences dwindled by half after the completion of the multiplex in The Light, in addition to the large cinema complex in Cardigan Fields, by Burley.
So what will become of it? Sadly for movie aficionado's, there will be no more films screened in that old building. No, ATC Properties, who own The Lounge, has appointed Jack Lunn construction to carry out the redevelopment, which will ultimately yield a brand new, exciting, supreme, fabulous, terrific, monuMENTAL . . .
. . . Sainsbury's.
Yes, you lucky people will be getting 4,000 sq ft of Sainsbury's store with 12 apartments housed above. What used to be the cinema's foyer will be occupied by Ask Restaurants.

The development should be completed by September 2012.Back to News
