Headingley Survival Guide - Best places to go in Headders!

Hi all! We've got a pretty sound knowledge of Headingley (Click on the link to see our area guide), with a number of properties in the area, so we thought it would be nice to share with you what we consider the best places to go. Here's our top 10:

1. Got student accommodation in Headingley? Get over to Cottage Road Cinema, the oldest cinema in the country, where they've been screening films continuously since 1912. As well as showing modern films, it has its special "Classics at the Cottage" night, where you can enjoy fantastic films from bygone eras such as Casablanca and The Godfather.

2. Wholesome fast-food may seem like an oxymoron, but let's not be hasty! At Wokon, you can watch your order being cooked from fresh right in front of you; you'll get no reheated garbage here. This is reflected in the taste, as it's really, really good. You get a lot of food for your money as well, which is a massive bonus. And unlike most fast-food joints, the staff are friendly and chatty.

3. Voted Best Local Yarn Store by Let's Knit magazine readers and Best Specialist Retailer at the Retail Therapy Awards 2010, Baa Ram Ewe is a wool trader with one of the world's biggest ranges of British wool and British sheep breeds. They hold workshops several times a month, usually priced between £35 and £45. "But that's expensive!" I hear you cry; well, think of the money you could save if you could knit your own jumpers. This is an investment that pays off in the long-term. The place itself is very bohemian, and offers a nice contrast to the usual eat-and-drink-your-face-off culture of the area.

4. Open since 1976, Salvo's CafÉ & Salumeria is something of an institution in Headingley. Salvo's was made famous by Gordon Ramsay as the UK's Best Neighbourhood Italian Restaurant in The F Word. By the way, a Salumeria is an Italian delicatessen. If you love Italian food, this place is heaven.

5. Another restaurant here, and yes, I know you're not made of money, but hear me out! Thai Sabai is a multi-award-winning restaurant that, believe it or not, specialises in authentic Thai food. The soft lighting lends to a romantic ambiance and the food is both excellent and well-priced. It really stands out as a quality restaurant in a city that isn't short of standard Asian takeaways.

6. Beckett's Park is a big pull with Leeds Met students as it's right by the campus. What's not to love about a park? Whether you want to sit and relax, read a book, people-watch, or have a kickabout, Beckett's Park is, weather permitting, a great place to be. With snow possibly looming, get the bin liners ready for some snow-based antics.

7. Are you a dancing queen? Do you want to be a dancing queen? You don't mind making a fool of yourself on the dance floor in the clubs, so why not actually try to impress others the next time you go out by taking a class at Headingley Dance Centre? I'm not just speaking to the ladies here. Be a real man: learn to dance!

8. Although it's probably best known for being the start of the infamous "Otley run" (convenient if you've got student housing in Headingley), Woodies Ale House has a lot more to offer than just the first pint of an epic booze-up. Leeds has a lot of bars, but not a lot of pubs; Woodies is definitely the latter. The real ale, cosy furniture, warm atmosphere, and emphasis on live music rather than sport make this a pleasant place to spend ones evening.

9. Arcadia Ale & Wine Bar isn't a typical student hole. In fact, it isn't a student hole at all. They've got a large selection of real ales and continental beers for the more discerning drinker. You're a student; you're supposed to be educating yourself; here, you can learn as you drink, experiencing the various cultures of the world through beer.

10. Last but not least, there's Headingley Stadium. On offer is cricket with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, rugby league with the Leeds Rhino's, and rugby union with Leeds Carnegie. Is that enough sport for you? Admit it, if you've got student accommodation in Headingley, you're slightly spoiled.

So there you have it. Renting student housing in Headingley opens your doors to a plethora of goodies that will leave your mates in other areas feeling a little bit jealous.
